From Rigsby to the Assembly Rooms

Wed 21 Nov 2007

RISING TO THE OCCASION
IT COULD be a mecca for budding Rupert Rigsbys.

Property owners from all over Edinburgh are set to gather at the Assembly Rooms on George Street for Edinburgh Landlord Day, organised by city council agency, Letwise.

And those property owners who resemble the infamous Rising Damp character will also find plenty of advice is on hand from a range of experts to transform themselves into model landlords, with a number of seminars being staged throughout the day, including the potentially helpful "Beginner's Guide to Letting Property".

The event, from 12pm to 7pm tomorrow, will also hold a drive encouraging landlords to sign up to the council's private-sector leasing (PSL) scheme - in a bid to provide accommodation for people in need of housing. The PSL scheme, which has been running for two years and is contracted to property services group Orchard & Shipman, has to find only 400 more properties to reach the 1,500 properties target.

FACT OF THE DAY
£741bn

BETWEEN 2000 and 2006, the total value of commercial buildings in the UK increased by 23.6 per cent to £741 billion, according to a new report commissioned by Royal & SunAlliance.

Entitled UK for sale - Global investment in UK commercial property, the report also reveals that some £21.7bn of commercial stock is estimated to have been under construction between 2006 and 2007.

KILLER QUOTE
"THERE are probably too many people, including academics, who think co-ops are old fashioned and fuddy-duddy."

Graeme Dalziel, chief executive of Dunfermline Building Society, on the benefits of member-owned financial services providers after the problems seen at Northern Rock.

GOOD DAY
Netintelligence

BAD DAY
DVD pirates

OFFICIALS in Malaysia raided a laboratory capable of churning out tens of millions of dollars worth of pirated DVDs a year in the nation's biggest such raid this year, a group representing major US studios yesterday confirmed. Malaysia is high on a US piracy watch-list.

Jargon Buster:  Commission

Payment made to a stockbroker when you buy or sell shares. In general, the level of commission you pay will either be a flat fee (possibly going up in stages according to the size of the deal) or a percentage based on the size of the deal.

An important determinant of the amount of commission you pay will be the kind of service you get from your broker.

1.  Discretionary : the broker has general discretion as to how he manages your portfolio

2.  Advisory: the broker will contact you to suggest changes in the composition of your portfolio, but he does not have the authority to trade on a completely discretionary basis.

3.  Execution only: the broker's primary function is to execute the buy/sell instructions which you give him. He does not give advice either proactively or at your request.

As a rule, execution only brokers are the cheapest for transaction costs.
